Special Guest Speaker
The Honorable Charles D. McConnell
former Assistant Secretary of Energy, U.S. Department of Energy – Fossil
and current Executive Director, Energy and Environment Initiative Rice University
The American Coal Council welcomes the Honorable Charles D. McConnell as our special guest speaker at the upcoming Spring Coal Forum conference March 3-5, 2015 in Clearwater Beach, Florida. Mr. McConnell is the former Assistant Secretary of Energy, U.S. Department of Energy – Fossil (2011-2013) and current Executive Director Energy and Environment Initiative Rice University. His background includes 31 years with Praxair, an industrial gases company, and two years as Vice President of Carbon Management with Battelle Energy Technology.
Mr. McConnell is an outspoken proponent on the need to develop viable pathways for the continued advancement of clean fossil fuels. In a guest editorial at THE HILL after delivering House testimony last August on EPA’s proposed rules for power sector carbon emissions, he wrote “We don’t need hollow rules that deliver political rhetoric. We need advanced technologies so that it’s just not all pain and no gain.” His definition of sustainability encompasses transformational technologies that have both a business purpose and environmental benefits.
